Mexican restaurant denied trans woman entry to the ladies’ room. “They’re going to shut you down,” she told them

“If I wear a skirt and enter a women’s restroom, does that make me a woman?” one of the employees asked. This took place in Campeche, Mexico.

Unfortunately, even two decades into the 21st century, there are still many cases where members of the LGBTQI community are victims of hate speech and hate crimes. Sadly for many families, discrimination still affects many gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Such was the case that recently happened in Mexico, in the region of Campeche, which went viral on social media.

A trans woman was expelled from a restaurant after denouncing the act of discrimination where she was targeted.

This transgender citizen had gone to the Odisea Cantina and Bar, located in the city of San Francisco, with a friend who is also trans. Little did she know that she’d be the victim of serious discrimination because of her gender identity. The workers of the restaurant didn’t allow her to enter the women’s restroom since, from their point of view, that place wasn’t meant for her.

The woman identified herself as such and had documents to corroborate her female gender, but this didn’t change anything.

“If I wear a skirt and go into a women’s restroom, does that make me a woman?”

– said one of the employees, according to the highly commented video on Milenio

“No, no, she has her ID. Can’t you see that she’s a woman? This is the last time you will discriminate against someone. We’re coming from above. You’re going to get this whole business shut down. This is discrimination. We have been fighting for 32 years, fighting against people like you, asshole. I’m going make this business shut down.”

–was the response from the friend and another one of the restaurant’s transgender clients.

After the argument, both trans women were expelled from the establishment. Despite the criticism this restaurant in Mexico has received for its transphobic attack and for the bad moment they made this trans woman go through, it still hasn’t stepped forward to speak on the matter. It hasn’t issued any comments or apologies about what was seen in the controversial video either.

To make the situation worse and make the experience even more difficult for this trans woman, there are people who have sided with the restaurant, also denying the victim’s gender identity. This shows that, no matter how much legislative progress has been made, there is still a lack of education when it comes to respecting other people.
